The current instance grew 5.5GB with ZERO requests (only idle watcher cycles) — it's a background leak, not request-driven. And it started right after a clean restart at 22:30. Checking whether the binary changed at that moment:
Binary rebuilt at 22:32:45 — main.rs was modified TODAY 22:32:15, right when the first restarts began. The previous build ran 5.5 days at 90MB peak. The new build leaks ~600MB/min even idle. Checking git for exactly what changed:

Unit removed and stopped. One process still matching "openclaw" — checking it's not a straggler:
Done — fully gone. The "1" match was just my own command wrapper echoing the grep word, not a process.
1. WHAT IT WAS — openclaw-gateway.service was a zombie: the openclaw package (/usr/lib/node_modules/openclaw) and data dir (~/.openclaw) were already deleted at some point, but its user-level systemd unit survived and crash-looped every 5s forever (776k+ restarts, MODULE_NOT_FOUND, journald spam).
2. DELETED — the two remaining files: ~/.config/systemd/user/openclaw-gateway.service and its enablement symlink. Disabled + stopped + daemon-reload. No sudo needed, no openclaw binary/data existed to remove.
3. VERIFIED — unit list clean, zero openclaw processes, restart loop dead. Port 18789 was already unused.
4. NOT TOUCHED (so you know why they remain) — /home/ubuntu/docs/openclaw_setup.md (just a doc — say the word and I'll delete it too), plugin-marketplace docs inside .claude/.copilot (third-party plugin caches), and Hermes' own openclaw-migration tooling (part of hermes-agent, unrelated to the service).
