It belongs to the same category as Claude Code (Anthropic), Codex (OpenAI), and OpenClaw — autonomous coding and task-execution agents that use tool calling to interact with your system. Hermes works with any LLM provider (OpenRouter, Anthropic, OpenAI, DeepSeek, local models, and 15+ others) and runs on Linux, macOS, and WSL.\n\nWhat makes Hermes different:\n\n- **Self-improving through skills** — Hermes learns from experience by saving reusable procedures as skills. When it solves a complex problem, discovers a workflow, or gets corrected, it can persist that knowledge as a skill document that loads into future sessions. Skills accumulate over time, making the agent better at your specific tasks and environment.\n- **Persistent memory across sessions** — remembers who you are, your preferences, environment details, and lessons learned. Pluggable memory backends (built-in, Honcho, Mem0, and more) let you choose how memory works.\n- **Multi-platform gateway** — the same agent runs on Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, Matrix, Email, and 10+ other platforms with full tool access, not just chat.\n- **Provider-agnostic** — swap models and providers mid-workflow without changing anything else. Credential pools rotate across multiple API keys automatically.\n- **Profiles** — run multiple independent Hermes instances with isolated configs, sessions, skills, and memory.\n- **Extensible** — plugins, MCP servers, custom tools, webhook triggers, cron scheduling, and the full Python ecosystem.\n\nPeople use Hermes for software development, research, system administration, data analysis, content creation, home automation, and anything else that benefits from an AI agent with persistent context and full system access.\n\n**This skill helps you work with Hermes Agent effectively** — setting it up, configuring features, spawning additional agent instances, troubleshooting issues, finding the right commands and settings, and understanding how the system works when you need to extend or contribute to it.\n\n**Docs:** https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/\n\n## Quick Start\n\n```bash\n# Install\ncurl -fsSL https://raw.githubuserco

Yes — via the Nous Portal, and it's the recommended provider for Hermes. Your setup: currently on deepseek-v4-flash, and there's a leftover "nous" entry in auth.json with no login (portal info says "not logged in").
What you need:
1. A Nous Portal subscription — paid, sign up at portal.nousresearch.com/manage-subscription.
2. One OAuth login — `hermes model` → pick "Nous Portal", or `hermes setup --portal` for fresh setup. Opens a browser login; no API key needed.
3. That's it. The subscription unlocks 300+ frontier agentic models (Hermes 4, Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Qwen, Kimi, GLM...) plus the Tool Gateway (web search, image gen, TTS, browser) billed to your subscription.
Since you already have a stale nous entry in auth.json, the login should overwrite it cleanly — if you hit auth errors after login, tell me and I'll clear it.
Want me to kick off the setup now? Note: the login step opens a browser on your end — I can run `hermes model` for you, but you'll need to complete the OAuth in your browser.

# Hermes Agent - Development Guide
Instructions for AI coding assistants and developers working on the hermes-agent codebase.
**Never give up on the right solution.**
## What Hermes Is
Hermes is a personal AI agent that runs the same agent core across a CLI, a
messaging gateway (Telegram, Discord, Slack, and ~20 other platforms), a TUI,
and an Electron desktop app. It learns across sessions (memory + skills),
delegates to subagents, runs scheduled jobs, and drives a real terminal and
browser. It is extended primarily through **plugins and skills**, not by
growing the core.
Two properties shape almost every design decision and are the lens for
reviewing any change:
- **Per-conversation prompt caching is sacred.** A long-lived conversation
reuses a cached prefix every turn. Anything that mutates past context,
swaps toolsets, or rebuilds the system prompt mid-conversation invalidates
that cache and multiplies the user's cost. We do not do it (the one
exception is context compression).
- **The core is a narrow waist; capability lives at the edges.** Every model
tool we add is sent on every API call, so the bar for a new *core* tool is
high. Most new capability should arrive as a CLI command + skill, a
service-gated tool, or a plugin — not as core surface.
## Contribution Rubric — What We Want / What We Don't
This is the project's intent layer. Use it two ways:
1. **For humans and for your own work** — what gets merged and what gets
rejected, so a contribution aims at the target.
2. **For automated review (the triage sweeper)** — guidance on when a PR is
safe to close on the three allowed reasons (`implemented_o

Good news: headless is exactly what this flow is built for. It's device-code OAuth, not a localhost browser dance. Here's how it plays out:
1. I run `hermes portal` in a tmux session on the VPS (it's a wizard, needs a TTY, no display needed).
2. It hits portal.nousresearch.com/api/oauth/device/code and prints a verification URL — the code is already baked into the URL. The webbrowser.open attempt fails silently headless; it just prints the link and starts polling (every ~1s).
3. I grab that URL from the tmux output and paste it to you right here.
4. You open it in any browser on any device — your laptop, phone, anywhere. Sign in (or subscribe first), approve.
5. The wizard on the VPS picks up the token automatically, then offers: pick a Nous model, switch provider to nous, enable Tool Gateway. I drive those prompts via tmux, you just tell me which model you want (or I take the default).
One prerequisite check: do you already have a Nous Portal account/subscription? If not, step 4 ends at the sign-up + payment page (portal.nousresearch.com/manage-subscription) — worth knowing before we fire it.

Login landed — you're connected. But there's a catch the picker just told us:
"Your current Nous Portal plan does not include paid service access, so paid Nous models is unavailable. Upgrade or add credits at portal.nousresearch.com/billing."
Meaning: your account works, but only free-tier models are unlocked right now (stealth/ox-alpha, stepfun step-3.7-flash:free, tencent hy3:free, etc.). The actual Nous models — hermes-4, and the full 300+ paid catalog (Claude, GPT, Gemini...) — need paid service access on the plan.
The wizard is paused at the model picker, waiting for your call:
1. Upgrade billing at portal.nousresearch.com/billing (add credits/subscription tier), then tell me — I'll refresh and pick a real Nous/Hermes model. This is what you actually want.
2. Grab a free model now (stealth/ox-alpha) just to confirm the portal pipeline works end-to-end, upgrade later.
3. Skip — keep deepseek as-is for now, portal logged in for later.

That 400 is a request-body problem, and the message is telling you exactly what it is. Decoded:
1. Your client (the Tomcat app) is sending OpenRouter-style provider routing in the body — a `provider: {only: [...], ignore, order, sort, data_collection, zdr, require_parameters}` block.
2. Nous Portal does NOT accept those. Routing is decided centrally on their side per model, so they hard-reject the fields with 400 rather than silently ignore them.
3. Fix: strip the entire `provider` object from chat completions calls to inference-api.nousresearch.com/v1. Keep model, messages, max_tokens — drop `provider` and its routing keys.
4. Likely culprit source: this machine's config.yaml has `provider_routing.only: [deepinfra, decart]` — if your Tomcat app copies that same routing list into its request, that's exactly what Nous is choking on. Hermes itself only emits routing on openrouter, never on the Nous endpoint — so this is coming from your app's own request construction.
Quick check on your side: does the Tomcat app's request JSON have a "provider" key? If yes — delete it and retry. If you tell me where that app lives (path/URL), I can hunt down the line building the body and patch it.

Found and fixed. The culprit was on this VPS all along — your Hermes config, not any Tomcat app:
1. Root cause: config.yaml had `provider_routing.only: [deepinfra, decart]`. When Hermes talks to the Nous provider, its request builder injects that as a `provider: {only: [deepinfra, decart]}` block into every chat request body.
2. Nous Portal rejects exactly that — routing is central on their side, so any caller-supplied `only/ignore/order/sort/...` fields get a hard 400. The error text you pasted names the fields verbatim.
3. Fix applied: `hermes config set provider_routing.only '[]'` — verified config now reads `only: []`, which is falsy, so no `provider` routing object gets emitted. No more 400 from this box. (No Tomcat here by the way — checked processes, systemd, docker, nginx; if the error also appears from an app on your work PC, same fix there: delete the provider routing fields from its request.)
4. Takes effect on new Hermes sessions (config is read at startup).
The wizard from our login is still paused at the model picker — but remember, your plan has no paid service access, so only free models are selectable. Want me to: (a) pick a free model now (stealth/ox-alpha) to test the whole pipeline, (b) you upgrade billing first then I pick a real Hermes/Claude model, or (c) skip — stay on deepseek, portal logged in for later?

Mystery solved — it worked, then it didn't, and the log has receipts:
1. Your longcat session DID die on this 400. errors.log shows session 20260822_113050_319c8a got HTTP 400 twice at 11:32:06 and 11:32:20 — provider=nous, model meituan/longcat-2.0:free, on the "continue"/"hi" turn. That's what broke your pipe.
2. Why the first reply worked: that first call went out WITHOUT the provider routing block (Hermes drops it on that call path). The next normal chat call carried provider: {only: [deepinfra, decart]} — built from your config's provider_routing — and Nous hard-rejected it. So free longcat worked for exactly one turn.
3. The error text itself gave the fix: "Remove the `provider` object from your request."
4. Done. provider_routing.only is now empty, so the block never gets built.
5. Proof it's fixed: I just ran a live call — meituan/longcat-2.0:free via Nous — and it answered "longcat-ok". No 400. Your free longcat works turn after turn now.
One thing still on the table: the model-picker wizard from the login is still paused in tmux, and your plan has no paid access — so paid Nous models (Hermes-4, Claude, etc.) stay locked until you upgrade at portal.nousresearch.com/billing. Want me to finish the wizard with longcat (or another free model), or leave it?

that tmux screen can die as i am now using hermes - check there is no activity in it

Done. The tmux wizard was idle — same paused model-picker screen since 09:20, zero new output — so I killed it:
1. tmux session "portal" terminated, no sessions left.
2. The wizard process (PID 2435904) is gone.
Nothing else was running in it, and your Nous login/token in auth.json is unaffected — that's stored separately. Your current Hermes session keeps working as-is.
For the record: we're still on deepseek in this chat, and the portal account is logged in with provider_routing cleared — so whenever you want, a fresh `hermes model` → Nous Portal pick (or `/model`) gets you on longcat or any other model, and paid Nous models unlock the day you top up billing.

Short answer: nous — yes. "tomcat" — no such model exists, and I checked the authoritative list:
1. Choosing nous as provider: works. Login is stored, routing cleared, and we proved it live — longcat answered "longcat-ok" minutes ago.
2. "tomcat" is not in the Nous catalog. I scanned all 371 Nous models plus every provider's cache — zero hits for "tomcat". The model you're remembering is almost certainly meituan/longcat-2.0 — the one you already used today ("yes it was free longcat").
3. Your currently unlocked free picks: meituan/longcat-2.0:free, stepfun/step-3.7-flash:free, tencent/hy3:free, upstage/solar-pro4:free, poolside/laguna-s-2.1:free, poolside/laguna-xs-2.1:free. All will work.
4. Everything else in the 371 (hermes-4, claude, gpt, gemini...) shows in the picker but stays locked until your plan gets paid access (portal.nousresearch.com/billing).
If "tomcat" came from a screen somewhere else — OpenRouter, a website, some other app — tell me where you saw it and I'll hunt it down.
