Findings, substantiated:
1. Scanner's own metrics FAIL as anchor-pickers: lag_ratio +0.05, flips_45d +0.04, lipi_move +0.06 (correlation with 12:20 advantage). The current "safe to swing" screen says nothing about which anchor to use. Confirmed negative.
2. Two factors DO lean predictive (both Pearson AND Spearman agree, ~0.4-0.5):
- gap_share +0.48/+0.41: stocks whose daily move comes mostly from the OVERNIGHT GAP favor 12:20. Logic: if the money is made overnight, entering at midday vs close barely matters, and you dodge close-auction noise.
- trend_efficiency +0.40/+0.37: smooth trending stocks (net move / sum of daily moves) favor 12:20 — the trend is already visible at midday; no need to wait for the close.
- Both have violators (INFY: eff 0.183 yet -39; BIOCON), and n=12 stocks is too small to call proof.
3. knife_freq leans negative (-0.28): ULTRACEMCO (100% knife-edge days — pinned to LIPI every close) is the biggest close-anchor winner. But INDIGO (66% knife) violates it by being the biggest 12:20 winner. Not reliable alone.
4. Honest bottom line: no factor predicts the better anchor reliably enough to hard-code per stock. What IS robust: anchors disagree only 2-13% of days on most stocks (INDIGO/HAL/SBIN are the exceptions at 31-45%), and portfolio P&L is equal either way.
5. So the scanner-worthy rule: add gap_share and trend_efficiency as new scanner vars (both computable from data we already store), rank swing candidates by them, but the TRADE GATE should be the agreement rule — 12:20 signal and close signal must agree, else skip/half-size.
