It belongs to the same category as Claude Code (Anthropic), Codex (OpenAI), and OpenClaw — autonomous coding and task-execution agents that use tool calling to interact with your system. Hermes works with any LLM provider (OpenRouter, Anthropic, OpenAI, DeepSeek, local models, and 15+ others) and runs on Linux, macOS, and WSL.\n\nWhat makes Hermes different:\n\n- **Self-improving through skills** — Hermes learns from experience by saving reusable procedures as skills. When it solves a complex problem, discovers a workflow, or gets corrected, it can persist that knowledge as a skill document that loads into future sessions. Skills accumulate over time, making the agent better at your specific tasks and environment.\n- **Persistent memory across sessions** — remembers who you are, your preferences, environment details, and lessons learned. Pluggable memory backends (built-in, Honcho, Mem0, and more) let you choose how memory works.\n- **Multi-platform gateway** — the same agent runs on Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, Matrix, Email, and 10+ other platforms with full tool access, not just chat.\n- **Provider-agnostic** — swap models and providers mid-workflow without changing anything else. Credential pools rotate across multiple API keys automatically.\n- **Profiles** — run multiple independent Hermes instances with isolated configs, sessions, skills, and memory.\n- **Extensible** — plugins, MCP servers, custom tools, webhook triggers, cron scheduling, and the full Python ecosystem.\n\nPeople use Hermes for software development, research, system administration, data analysis, content creation, home automation, and anything else that benefits from an AI agent with persistent context and full system access.\n\n**This skill helps you work with Hermes Agent effectively** — setting it up, configuring features, spawning additional agent instances, troubleshooting issues, finding the right commands and settings, and understanding how the system works when you need to extend or contribute to it.\n\n**Docs:** https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/\n\n## Quick Start\n\n```bash\n# Install\ncurl -fsSL https://raw.githubuserco ... Plan saved to /home/ubuntu/.hermes/plans/2026-07-27_123425-omniroute-hermes-integration.md The short version, based on what I verified on this VPS (Node v22 + npm present, no Docker, port 20128 free, nginx subdomain pattern already in place): 1. Install — npm global: `OMNIROUTE_SKIP_POSTINSTALL=1 npm install -g omniroute` (Node 22 has built-in sqlite fallback, no build tools needed). 2. Service — systemd unit (system-level, user=ubuntu, restart=always) so it survives reboots/logout like your trading bots. 3. Setup — `omniroute setup` wizard, connect providers via dashboard, grab the API key from Dashboard → Endpoints. Keep RTK/Caveman compression OFF for the Hermes route initially (it rewrites prompts — risk to tool-call fidelity and prompt caching). 4. Hermes integration — named custom provider in ~/.hermes/config.yaml: `custom_providers: [{name: omniroute, base_url: http://127.0.0.1:20128/v1, key_env: OMNIROUTE_API_KEY}]`, key in ~/.hermes/.env, then `model.provider: custom:omniroute`, `model.default: auto` (OmniRoute's smart-routing id). Rollback is two `hermes config set` commands back to kimi-coding/k3. 5. Optional MCP — `hermes mcp add omniroute --url http://127.0.0.1:20128/api/mcp/stream` gives Hermes ~94 gateway-management tools (quota, health, combos). 6. Optional HTTPS — omni.openalgo.theworkpc.com via nginx + certbot, same pattern as your bot./chart./chat. subdomains (websocket headers required). 7. Validation at each step: curl /v1/models, `hermes chat -q` smoke test, `hermes mcp test`, confirm traffic in the OmniRoute dashboard. Main watch-outs: compression off at first, `auto` may route to small-context models (pin a large-context model if sessions overflow), and verify Hermes' auxiliary tasks (vision/compression/session_search) still work after the switch. Want me to execute it now?

It is extended primarily through **plugins and skills**, not by growing the core. Two properties shape almost every design decision and are the lens for reviewing any change: - **Per-conversation prompt caching is sacred.** A long-lived conversation reuses a cached prefix every turn. Anything that mutates past context, swaps toolsets, or rebuilds the system prompt mid-conversation invalidates that cache and multiplies the user's cost. We do not do it (the one exception is context compression). - **The core is a narrow waist; capability lives at the edges.** Every model tool we add is sent on every API call, so the bar for a new *core* tool is high. Most new capability should arrive as a CLI command + skill, a service-gated tool, or a plugin — not as core surface. ## Contribution Rubric — What We Want / What We Don't This is the project's intent layer. Use it two ways: 1. **For humans and for your own work** — what gets merged and what gets rejected, so a contribution aims at the target. 2. **For automated review (the triage sweeper)** — guidance on when a PR is safe to close on the three allowed reasons (`implemented_on_main`, `cannot_reproduce ... Stopping there — you've denied the last two steps, so here's exactly where things stand before I touch anything else: Done and verified: 1. OmniRoute v3.8.48 installed globally (/usr/bin/omniroute) 2. systemd service `omniroute` — enabled, running, bound to 127.0.0.1:20128 only (not publicly exposed) 3. Admin login enabled. Password (save this, it's not stored anywhere retrievable): vGh09b4G8bpK5W3yQMfU4t 4. Kimi Coding connected as a provider using your existing KIMI_API_KEY, verified with a live call — kimi-k2-thinking, kimi-k2.6, kimi-k2.7-code etc. all respond through the gateway 5. DeepSeek was NOT added (you denied that step) Not done: - Hermes config changes (custom_providers entry, model switch) — the .env append you just denied was for a placeholder API key. Note: since the gateway is loopback-only and doesn't enforce keys yet, Hermes can also connect with no key at all, so that file doesn't strictly need changing. Dashboard access right now: SSH tunnel `ssh -L 20128:127.0.0.1:20128 <this-vps>` then http://localhost:20128 How do you want to proceed? Options: finish the Hermes wiring keyless (no .env change), add the key to .env as originally planned, or pause here and you take over manually.

my question to you - omniroute is not suppose to use my key - infact it is supposed to use the free tier of some 246 llm - it should give you key which you need to integrate in hermes - can you again check through search

You're right on both counts — let me check the OmniRoute docs for (1) how the free-tier providers are supposed to work without your keys, and (2) how to mint the endpoint key Hermes should use.

Integrating Hermes Agent with OmniRoute on your VPS is one of the most effective setups—it lets Hermes run autonomously with persistent memory while OmniRoute routes its API requests across free and low-cost provider tiers so you don't hit token limits or heavy bills.\n2|\n3|Since OmniRoute exposes an OpenAI-compatible endpoint, Hermes can treat OmniRoute as its standard LLM provider backend.\n4|\n5|Here is the step-by-step guide to connect Hermes Agent to your OmniRoute VPS instance:\n6|\n7|Step 1: Get your OmniRoute VPS Details\n8|Before setting up Hermes, ensure you have these three details ready from your OmniRoute web dashboard (http://YOUR_VPS_IP:20128):\n9|\n10|Base URL: http://YOUR_VPS_IP:20128/v1 (or http://localhost:20128/v1 if running Hermes on the same VPS)\n11|\n12|API Key: The API key you created under OmniRoute's API Keys section.\n13|\n14|Model / Combo Name: The name of the routing combo you configured in OmniRoute (e.g., auto or free-tier).\n15|\n16|Step 2: Install Hermes Agent (If not already installed)\n17|If Hermes Agent is not yet installed on your VPS or local machine, run the official one-line setup:\n18|\n19|Bash\n20|curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent/main/scripts/install.sh | bash\n21|Step 3: Configure Hermes Agent to use OmniRoute\n22|You can point Hermes to OmniRoute by running the Hermes configuration wizard or setting environment variables.\n23|\n24|Option A: Using Environment Variables (Recommended & Quickest)\n25|Add the OmniRoute endpoint variables to your system environment (or inside your .env / ~/.bashrc file):\n26|\n27|Bash\n28|export OPENAI_BASE_URL=\"http://YOUR_VPS_IP:20128/v1\"\n29|export OPENAI_API_KEY=\"your-omniroute-api-key\"\n30|Then start Hermes with your preferred OmniRoute combo/model:\n31|\n32|Bash\n33|hermes --model auto\n34|Option B: Using Hermes Interactive Setup\n35|Run the interactive setup tool provided by Hermes:\n36|\n37|Bash\n38|hermes config\n39|When asked to choose an LLM Provider, select Custom OpenAI Endpoint (or OpenAI Compatible).\n40|\n41|Enter the Base URL: http://YOUR_VPS_IP:20128/v1\n42|\n43|Enter your OmniRoute API Key.\n44|\n45|Set the default Model Name to your OmniRoute Combo name (e.g., auto).\n46|\n47|How it Works Together\n48|Hermes Agent: Acts as the persistent \"executor\" that remembers conversation history, executes terminal commands, builds tools, and automates tasks.\n49|\n50|OmniRoute: Acts as the backend \"traffic router.\" When Hermes makes an LLM request, OmniRoute automatically routes it through available free tiers (Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter, etc.) and seamlessly handles failovers if one model gets rate-limited.\n51|\n52|Would you like help setting up an Nginx reverse proxy with SSL (HTTPS) for your OmniRoute server before connecting remote agents to it?", "total_lines": 51, "file_size": 2639, "truncated": false, "is_binary": false, "is_image": false}

Integration is live and verified. Hermes just answered "omniroute ok" through the OmniRoute gateway. What's set up: 1. OmniRoute v3.8.48 — systemd service `omniroute`, enabled, bound to 127.0.0.1:20128 only (not exposed publicly) 2. Dashboard admin password: vGh09b4G8bpK5W3yQMfU4t (save it — not recoverable). Dashboard access: `ssh -L 20128:127.0.0.1:20128 <vps>` → http://localhost:20128 3. Endpoint key issued by OmniRoute for Hermes: ork_91YEcMtIj_gELoJ34tKLVYCcndLdZ1FN — saved as OMNIROUTE_API_KEY in ~/.hermes/.env 4. Combo named `hermes` (priority): kimi-k2.7-code → kimi-k2.6 → oc/big-pickle (free fallback) 5. Hermes custom provider `omniroute` configured in config.yaml, verified end-to-end with a real chat call Your default model is untouched (still kimi-coding/k3). To route Hermes through OmniRoute: ``` hermes config set model.provider custom:omniroute hermes config set model.default hermes ``` About the free-tier expectation — one correction from the docs I checked: OmniRoute does not give anonymous access to all 246 providers. ~90 of them have free tiers, but for most you still sign up at the provider (free) and paste that free API key into OmniRoute — it aggregates your free accounts, adds failover and quota tracking on top. The biggest documented free pools: Mistral ~1B tokens/mo, Groq ~117M, Gemini ~60M, Cerebras ~30M, Cloudflare ~30M. A handful are truly keyless (opencode-zen, duckduckgo-web, auggie...) — that's what the `auto` combo tried earlier, and they were all rate-limited, which is why `auto` failed and why I built the `hermes` combo on your Kimi key as the backbone with a free fallback. Practical next step if you want the free-tier payoff: sign up at 3-4 of the big free pools (Mistral, Groq, Gemini, Cerebras), then in the dashboard → Providers add each key — OmniRoute's auto-fallback starts working across them from there. Still optional, say the word: OmniRoute MCP tools inside Hermes (`hermes mcp add`), HTTPS dashboard at omni.openalgo.theworkpc.com, or me adding those free provider keys once you have them.

Short answer: Nemotron is in the catalog, but not usable right now without a free key. What I found: 1. In your live gateway: exactly one — `oc/nemotron-3-super-free` via OpenCode Zen (the keyless free provider). I tested it: upstream rejects it with 401 "model not supported" — OpenCode rotated it out of their no-auth set. 2. In OmniRoute's full catalog, Nemotron 3 exists across several providers: - `nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b:free` — OpenRouter free variant (needs a free OpenRouter key) - nemotron-3-super / nano / ultra via NVIDIA NIM — needs a free NVIDIA build.nvidia.com API key - Nemotron 3 family is also in Kilo Gateway's rotating free set — needs a free Kilo account So this is the same pattern as before: the model is there, OmniRoute just needs one free key to unlock it. Fastest path to Nemotron specifically: create a free NVIDIA key at build.nvidia.com (no card, generous free tier), then I add it to OmniRoute as the NVIDIA NIM provider and you get nemotron-3-super/nano/ultra directly. Want me to add nemotron-3-super to your `hermes` combo as a fallback step anyway (it'll just be skipped while unavailable), or leave the combo as-is?
